Mark Gilbert is a representational painter working in oil, watercolour and pencil who makes work in response to his immediate environment. He gets much of his inspiration and stimulus from his travels abroad.

A colleague said of his recent work
"With Mark, what you see is what you get. What you see are sharp observations and drawings which capture the atmosphere and colour of the scenes and the activities of the people in them. What you get are lovely, quickly executed watercolours and small, skilfully drawn oil paintings"

Some of the more exotic places Gilbert has taken as his subject include Morocco, Zanzibar, Egypt, Iceland, South Africa, Tanzania and most recently, Peru and Ecuador. Work from his most recent trips to India form the basis of his exhibition in London this Summer and is included here.

His paintings are then worked on in his studio in the south of England or in Scotland on the Isle of Skye where he spends part of the year painting in his studio there.
